Retail Waste reduction resources

Corporate policies often dictate that employees and managers must comply with destroying or throwing away unsaleable but otherwise useable goods, or risk being fired and charged with theft. However, corporate policy must abide by all local regulations. We have drafted a template for a county ordinance that would allow the recovery of such goods for use by the community, through redistribution to nonprofits or composting for community gardens, while minimizing administrative or fiscal burdens on both businesses and government. Feel free to download, alter, and submit this ordinance to your local county board.

For those interested in doing so, your next steps will be to coordinate with your local activists and relevant groups, request that your proposal be added to the agenda of your next county board meeting, and prepare your 3 minute proposal speech.

We’re gonna show up and tell them why they need to adopt this ordinance!

Last meeting, Lydia Christensen spoke up and delivered them a copy of the ordinance I wrote. This month, we need to pressure them to adopt it!

The ordinance won’t add any financial or bureaucratic burden on businesses or the county. The only difference for businesses is that they will set aside salvageable goods (instead of destroy them) and the volunteer task force will pick them up, and sort them for redistribution or compost. If you are interested in free compost, farm animal feed, or volunteering to reclaim goods from businesses, please contact us!
